No, requesting tree removal solely due to the fear of an upcoming storm is not a valid reason for removal. Trees in county-owned easements or rights-of-way will only be removed if they are deemed to be blocking drainage, unhealthy, or pose a significant threat to safety or property.
Yes. Clay County utilizes inmate labor in accordance with Florida Statutes 946.002, which mandates that “every able-bodied prisoner imprisoned in any institution” perform “faithful labor” during their incarceration. The Clay County Public Works (CCPW) Inmate Work Squad program is designed to:
- Save taxpayer dollars through the use of cost-effective labor.
- Enhance the work ethic of selected inmates.
- Provide inmates with a productive outlet during their court-ordered sentences.
The CCPW Inmate Labor Section comprises three supervised units:
- Two state inmate crews from Lawtey Correctional Institute, each overseen by a certified inmate foreman.
- One jail crew from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), supervised by a correctional deputy.
All inmates assigned to these crews are low-risk, non-violent offenders. They are carefully selected and supervised to ensure public safety and high-quality work performance.
Inmate labor crews assist with a variety of manual tasks, including:
- Collecting and removing trash and debris.
- Mowing and trimming grass.
- Removing sediment from stormwater ditches and structures within county road rights-of-way.
This program allows for the efficient maintenance of public spaces while giving inmates a chance to contribute positively to the community.
