How We Control Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes can spread diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue, and Zika. These diseases can affect people, pets, livestock, and wildlife.
Clay County uses the following methods to manage mosquito populations:
- Monitoring mosquito activity across the county
- Testing mosquitoes for diseases
- Identifying areas where mosquitoes breed
- Applying treatments to control larval and adult mosquitoes
- Providing information and education to the public
Clay County’s mosquito control services are provided by Vector Disease Control International (VDCI) and are available to all residents.
Are Mosquito Sprays Safe for Bees?
Scientific evidence shows that mosquito control products are safe when used correctly. The health benefits of mosquito control outweigh the risks when applied by trained professionals using approved products. Spraying typically occurs at night when bees are in their hives.
How to Request Mosquito Spraying
You can request mosquito spraying by visiting Clay Connected.
After you submit a request, here is what to expect:
- With your permission, a mosquito control technician will inspect your property and surrounding areas.
- The technician will identify existing and potential breeding sites and develop a treatment plan.
- If adult mosquitoes are present, spraying (called Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) operations) will be scheduled.
