Clay County Fire Rescue is committed to protecting residents, businesses, and first responders by ensuring new construction and renovation projects comply with applicable fire and life safety codes.

Our Fire Prevention Division serves the unincorporated areas of Clay County, the City of Green Cove Springs, and the City of Keystone Heights by providing plan reviews, fire permits, inspections, and technical guidance throughout the construction process.

Whether you are an owner, developer, architect, contractor, or subcontractor, our staff is available to help you navigate fire code requirements and keep your project moving forward.

Six Basic Rules for Fire Safety Compliance

1. No work involving fire protection systems may begin until plans have been submitted, reviewed, approved, and the appropriate permit has been issued.
2. Approved plans bearing the official approval stamp and all required permits must be available on-site during inspections.
3. Roadways must be capable of supporting fire apparatus under all weather conditions. Contact the Fire Prevention Office for roadway design criteria.
4. Fire department access roads must remain clear of construction vehicles, equipment, materials, and debris at all times.
5. All electric, mechanical, or chained gates must provide approved emergency access for the fire department.
6. Construction using combustible materials may not begin until an approved water supply for firefighting operations has been established.

Project Submittal Requirements

1. Include a complete code summary describing the project scope, applicable codes and standards, and all symbols or abbreviations used on the plans.
2. Fire permit applications must include manufacturer specifications, site plans (when applicable), construction plans, and supporting documentation demonstrating code compliance.
3. Specialized fire protection systems or processes must include documentation explaining how the system operates and integrates with the building or fire protection system.
