Home MenuTrap, neuter, vaccinate, and return (TNVR)
TNVR program for Clay County residents
What is TNVR?
TNVR means Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return. It is a safe and helpful way to care for wild or stray cats. These cats are caught in a humane trap, taken to be fixed and vaccinated, and then returned to where they were found.
Why is TNVR important?
- It prevents more kittens from being born.
- It helps stop loud noises, fighting, and spraying.
- It protects cats and people by reducing diseases like rabies.
- It keeps cats out of shelters, where space is limited.
- Cats help by keeping away rats and mice.

Tips for humane cat trapping
To trap cats safely and kindly:
- Use a 30β36 inch trap with doors on both ends. You can buy one at Tractor Supply, Loweβs, Ace Hardware, or Home Depot.
- Bait the trap with canned tuna or mackerel. Put a little outside the trap and more inside.
- Hide the trap with leaves or branches, and place it in the shade.
- Check often to see if a cat is inside, but stay out of sight.
- Once a cat is caught, cover the trap with a towel or cloth to keep them calm.
- Do not use a carrier or kennel. Only use a humane trap when bringing cats to a TNVR site.

What is a community or feral cat?

- Feral cats are wild and usually avoid people.
If you see a cat with a tipped ear, it means the cat has already been fixed and vaccinated.
