Other Ways to Help Your Pet Before Giving Them Up

If you are thinking about giving up your pet, try these ideas first. They may help you keep your pet or find them a new home without bringing them to the shelter.

Try to Find a New Home Yourself

You may be able to find a good home for your pet without going to a shelter.

  • Talk to family and friends to see if they or someone they know is looking for a pet.
  • Tell your coworkers that your pet needs a new home.
  • Post flyers and use social media with a clear photo and information about your pet.
  • Use free rehoming websites to post information about your pet.
  • Keep your pet if you move. Many landlords allow pets, even if it takes extra time to find housing.

Tip: Pets that are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, and trained are more likely to be accepted by landlords and adopted by new families.

Get Help with Behavior Problems

Sometimes pets act out because they need help or training.

  • Review the Animal Humane Society Pet Behavior Library (opens in a new tab) for behavior tips and guidance.
  • Talk to your veterinarian. Some medical conditions can cause behavior problems.
  • If your pet shows aggressive behavior, your veterinarian may be able to provide a referral for additional help.

Ask for Pet Food Help

If you are having trouble affording pet food, we may be able to help.
