PAWS (Paws for Prisoners)
PAWS Program
Paws for Prisoners is a partnership between Clay County Animal Services and Putnam Correctional Institution that gives shelter dogs a second chance while providing inmates with an opportunity to make a positive impact.
How the Program Works
Dogs selected for the PAWS Program live with inmate trainers who work with them every day to build confidence, improve behavior, and prepare them for life in a permanent home.
Training includes:
- House training
- Crate training
- Walking politely on a leash
- Basic obedience and good manners
- Socialization with people
By learning these important skills, dogs are more likely to be adopted and remain successfully placed with their new families. The program benefits both the dogs and the inmate trainers by providing companionship, responsibility, and the opportunity to make a lasting difference.
