Here are some topics from the last Board of County Commissioners meeting. If you want to know more about what was discussed and decided, you can read the agendas and minutes as they get posted. You can watch the meeting in full on our Facebook page or website.
New street sweeper is sweeping its way through Clay County’s roads
A new street sweeper is sweeping its way through Clay County’s roads - and it has a new name - Sweep Dreams, named by second graders at Tynes Elementary School. It was a much-anticipated addition — the loud, vacuum-type truck helps make the County’s roads safer, it reduces road debris that could cause tire damage, and improves the stormwater quality, which helps improve the County’s waterways. Clay County’s students are impressive — with names like Lil’ Scrubby, The Sweeper-ella Express, Sweeptimus Prime, and other fantastic, creative ideas, selecting a name was not easy! But, in the end, one took the top spot: Sweep Dreams. Watch the presentation starting at the 15:10 time stamp, and you can watch the video.
Measuring the success of our new solid waste collection contract
Environmental Services Director Milton Towns updated Commissioners with a mid-year status report on the new solid waste collection contract. Initially FCC reported an average of 279 missed collections each week, which was reduced to 71 one month later. In March and April of 2025, an average of only 8 missed pickups were recorded out of 150,000 weekly collections. Missed collections are trending even further downward, with only 3 missed collections reported during the third week of May. FCC has completed 6,103 bulk collections, delivered or repaired 5,070 garbage carts, and has an overall 99.989% collection rate for garbage and yard waste. FCC has also reported answering more than 27,000 calls from our residents and performing a total of 5.2 million collection services through April. Listen to the update and discussion beginning at the 39:51-minute mark.
Architect selected for design of the new Oakleaf Library
Commissioners heard presentations from the top five consultants that provided their qualifications to provide professional architectural services for the design of a new two-story, 18,000 square foot Oakleaf Library. Nine firms responded to RFQ No. 24/25-052, and the staff’s ranking of the top five was very close in scoring, so Commissioners wanted to take a closer look at what each had to offer. After the presentations and follow-up questions, Commissioners selected Fleischman and Garcia & Planners as the best candidate to design the new Oakleaf library. The selection approval will be effective after the 72-hour protest period has expired. An agreement with the selected consultant will be brought back to the Board for approval. All design work is expected to be completed within 12 months of the agreement’s execution. Watch the five presentations and the Commissioners’ discussion and selection starting at the 1:03:26 timestamp.
Land Conservation Committee members appointed
Commissioners appointed the first members to the newly-created Forests and Farms Conservation Land Program (you could link to previous articles for background). The 11-member land conservation committee will act as technical advisors to the Board of County Commissioners on land acquisition and the creation and monitoring of land stewardship plans.
Matthew K. Corby, Heather F. Nagy, Rebecca Perry, and April J. Thomas were appointed based on their knowledge of environmentally sensitive lands or natural resource experience.
Josh Farley, Patrick Cooper Murphy, Randolph Padgett, and Dr. Craig Price, DVM, were appointed based on their knowledge of agriculture, silviculture, or animal husbandry.
Mark Feagle, Anne Christie C. Hingst, and Tina T. Sachs share an interest in natural resources or environmental issues and were appointed to represent the public.
Thank you to everyone who applied to serve on this committee, and congratulations to the selected members. We look forward to working with them to conserve our natural resources for generations to come! You can listen to the appointments and discussion starting at the 6:23:47 time stamp.
