Highlights from the January 28 Board of County Commissioners Meeting

Learn more about what was discussed and how it benefits our county

Post Date:02/06/2025 9:00 AM

Here are some topics from the last Board of County Commissioners meeting. If you want to know more about what was discussed and decided, you can read the agendas and minutes as they get posted.  You can watch the meeting in full on our Facebook page or website.

Meet some great local pets available now for adoption

Commissioners take some time at the beginning of each Board meeting to highlight some dogs and cats that are available for adoption at Clay County Animal Services. This week we featured Roxie, a one-year-old, mixed-breed, female dog who is crate-trained and enjoys snuggles and leisurely walks. Faith is a five-year-old hound mix who is calm, quiet, and perfect for a peaceful home. Nala is a two-year-old female cat who is looking for a calm, quiet home where she can feel safe and loved.  Oscar is a low-key, four-year-old male cat weighing in at 10 pounds. Oscar would thrive in an indoor/outdoor setting where he can sit on the porch and enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors. You can learn more about these adoptable pets starting at the 7:21-minute mark and see all our adoptable animals on our website. If you would like to meet one of these great pets, please contact our shelter at ClayAdoptions@claycountygov.com.

Recognizing our Clay student-athletes

Commissioners recognized the Fleming Island High School Golden Eagles Band, Boys Golf Team, and Senior Diver who recently won the title of State Champion in their respective competitions. The accomplishments of these hard-working student-athletes bring a strong sense of pride to our community, and these remarkable young men and women should be commended for their hard work, dedication, and perseverance.  We are so proud of our Clay student-athletes, and we enjoy the opportunity to recognize them here at our Board meetings. You can watch the presentation of the proclamation at the 10:03 time stamp.

Developing our vision for College Drive

Commissioners heard a summary of the College Drive Visioning and Strategic Development Charrette Action Plan report presented by Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. The College Drive Initiative is a grassroots effort that began in 2020 in response to corridor development that aims to brand the corridor as a destination through public education, improvements to safety and aesthetics, and a variety of community events. An Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance Panel of industry experts convened in 2023 to identify several key community improvement strategies. The recommendations from that report and community feedback gathered through stakeholder and community meetings and an online survey are components of the College Drive Visioning and Strategic Development Charrette Action Plan. The action plan contains short-, mid-, and long-term goals that could be considered including the creation of a Community Redevelopment Agency, branding and a sense of place, creating a mixed-use overlay district, safety enhancements, utility work, and roadway improvements. Listen to the presentation and discussion beginning at the 50:39-minute mark. You can review the action plan attached to this agenda.
