Here are some topics from the last Board of County Commissioners meeting. If you want to know more about what was discussed and decided, you can read the agendas and minutes as they get posted.  You can watch the meeting in full on our Facebook page or website.

Improving the capacity of our major roads

Road construction has begun on the Clay County Bonded Transportation Program projects in Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, and Lake Asbury. Expect lane closures and reduced speed zones. Work on County Road 218 from Cosmos Ave to Pine Tree Lane is forecasted to start in February 2024. Utility relocations will begin on County Road 209 from Peters Creek Bridge south to US 17 in Lake Asbury as soon as late November, with roadway construction to start in January 2024. Construction of operational improvements on County Road 209 (Russell Road) at the intersections of Oak Stream Road and Watkins Road will begin after the first of the year. Utility relocation work on CR 220 from Baxley Road to the west of Henley Road starts this winter ahead of the road widening project. Sandridge Road construction is well underway, from the intersection of Sandridge Road and Henley Road, and working east toward County Road 209, with a forecast completion in spring 2025. Construction work on the First Coast Expressway connector, Cathedral Oak Parkway, north of Green Cove Springs, is well underway with a forecasted completion in spring 2026. Check the Bonded Transportation Dashboard for updates and listen to the BCC update at 57:34.

Assessing county-wide flood risks to our critical assets

Commissioners are working with Jones Edmunds Engineering and Consulting Services on a county-wide flooding vulnerability assessment aligned with state statutes and the Florida DEP Resilient Florida guidelines. The comprehensive assessment will identify critical assets like drinking water facilities, power plants, and emergency medical facilities, among others, that could be impacted by future flooding and rising sea levels. The result of the assessment will be a list of projects that can be funded through grants to help protect our most vulnerable critical assets. The Resilient Florida grant program has millions of dollars for planning and hazard reduction projects available to counties with completed vulnerability assessments. If you would like to learn more, you can listen to the discussion at 1:17:25.

Some important topics of discussion coming up at the November 28th BCC Meeting include an update on the Clay County Strategic Plan and the selection of a new chair and vice chair.
