Highlights from the August 8 Board of County Commissioners Meeting

Learn more about what was discussed and how it benefits our county

Post Date:08/11/2023 10:31 AM

Here are some topics from the last Board of County Commissioners meeting. If you want to know more about what was discussed and decided, you can read the agendas and minutes as they get posted. You can watch the meeting in full on our Facebook page or website.

County and local firefighters reach contract agreement

The county and Clay County Fire Rescue Professionals, International Association of Firefighters Local 3362 recently completed successful negotiations for the Fiscal Year 22-24 agreement.  Firefighters and battalion chiefs were overwhelmingly in favor of the new agreement that limits consecutive work hours, increases annual leave accruals, adds the Juneteenth holiday and one personal leave day, and revises retirement payouts, among other items. The changes have been approved by commissioners who recognize the critical role these firefighters play in keeping the community safe. The discussion starts at 26:36 if you would like to listen.

New detoxification and recovery center coming to Clay County

Clay County recently received $3 million from the Florida Legislature to establish an in-patient detoxification and recovery center in our community. The best use of this funding would be to repurpose the old tax collector’s office and soon-to-be-vacant Florida Department of Health Bear Run Clinic in the Middleburg/Oakleaf area. The facilities can be remodeled to offer clinical detox, short-term residential care, outpatient services, and house Clay Behavioral Health and Clay Community Paramedicine staff where they are needed most. If you would like to learn more about these plans and the Clay County Substance Use Disorder working group, listen to the discussion starting at 32:29.

County strategic plan to align projects with community priorities

Clay County is working with the North Florida Regional Council to develop a strategic plan that aligns future county projects with input from our residents and community partners. Feedback was taken during a series of community meetings and through a survey that measured the importance of factors like quality of life, growth management, economy, and infrastructure. Projects planned over the next five years will be linked to measurable goals aligned with smart growth, community health, quality of life, resiliency, roads, stormwater, transportation, increased communication, and intergovernmental coordination themes. The discussion starts at 1:18:12 if you want to learn more.
