-2017 Winter Newsletter-
The Friends volunteered thousands of hours in 2016 at the library. We were busy sorting, stocking, advertising, selling, providing Super Saturday programming, making phone calls, shelving books, homework helping and planning for the future of the Friends of the Orange Park Library.
Our book sales in 2016 were a tremendous success. A big thank you to all who attended and to those patrons who donated their used books, DVD’s, audio books and magazines to the Friends. Without you, we could not raise the funds to help fund many of the library programs. We are sorry we were forced to cancel our October sale, but we cannot fight Mother Nature and the storms she sends us.
Among the many purchases made for the Orange Park Library in 2016 were vendors and supplies for several Children’s Summer Programs, renewal of the McNaughton Book Lease program, over 200 new children's and young adult books, over 200 DVD’s, two new DVD shelves, a new display rack for printed material and classification labels for the children's library. We also purchased a new popcorn machine and DVD player, security stanchions, a new floor mat for the meeting room, and a monitor and stand for advertising. We provided programming in the form of Super Saturdays for a few months last year at no expense to the county.
The Friends donated hundreds of books and VHS tapes to various recipients around Orange Park including Haven Hospice, the Orange Park Senior Citizens Center, Quigley House, the Consulate, Life Care, the Healthcare Center, Signature Health Care Center and the Salvation Army. We hope these items have been enjoyed by many.
Volunteerism and the Friends of the Orange Park Library
The Friends of the Orange Park Library is a voluntary, non-sectarian, non-profit organization created to promote improvement of the facilities and services of the Orange Park Public Library. Our volunteers choose to donate some of their free time by helping the Friends to support it. Some members donate as little as an hour a week, some choose to donate more time. There are those who only volunteer to help at our book sales. Whatever time they choose to give, it is all welcomed with a smile.
To finance the purchases of media and activities sponsored by the Friends, used book sales are held quarterly. The group also stocks and maintains the Nick Nichols Corner Book Store inside the library. All books, magazines, DVD's, CD's, and audio books which are donated to the Friends by the public and are in good condition, are sold for a nominal fee. All proceeds from the book sales and the store are returned to the community through purchases and services for the Orange Park Library and its patrons. The Friends purchase over twenty (20) newspaper and magazine subscriptions, DVD’s, audio books and other materials for the circulation department. We also coordinate with the county to help fund the Children's Summer Reading Program and adult and teen programming. This is all made possible by donations from the Orange Park community.
Wish List @Amazon.com
The Orange Park Library needs more current media for the library. For this reason, a Wish List at Amazon.com has been created in the name of "Friends of the Orange Park Library". If you are interested in donating a book, audio book, DVD or CD to the library, please click on the following link. It will take you to our wish list. Thank you in advance for any donations you make to your local, hometown library. It will be greatly appreciated.
