SHIP: Did You Know?
-
Funding for the Clay County
SHIP Program is generated from state-wide document stamps tax on deeds and
notes. No funding comes from local property taxes or revenues.
- The Clay County SHIP Homeowners Rehabilitation Program has repaired over 250
homes for homeowners who are classified as very-low income, or low income. Repairs included new roofs, electrical hazards,
plumbing, heating, handicap additions (wheel chair ramps, handicap
accessible rooms).
- The Clay County SHIP first time home buyers programs have assisted over 250
first time home buyers purchasing a home in Clay County. New and existing
homes have been purchased throughout the county. The SHIP funds assist with
down payment and closing costs, principal buy downs. New or existing home
sale price cannot exceed $247,500.
- Clay County SHIP and the Clay County Extension
Services offers the eight hour Homebuyer Education class to SHIP applicants and others. The classes address home
maintenance inside and out and how to prepare a first time home buyer for
the purchase of a home. All classes are free to the participants.
-
Clay County SHIP, Clay County Habitat for Humanity, Inc., and the Clay
County School Board formed a partnership resulting in new houses being
built for families who are very-low or low income. Clay County high school
students are involved in the construction of the houses which are built at
the various county high schools. The houses are then moved to permanent
locations throughout the county. The students gain valuable training and
knowledge in the construction field plus the reduced cost of construction is passed on to the homebuyer.
-
Clay County SHIP is involved in non-profit funding to
assist in the construction/purchase of temporary/permanent housing for
special needs groups. One example of this was SHIP's participation in the construction of
Quigley House, a place of shelter for abused women and children in Clay
County. Also, SHIP funds assisted the Clay County Association for the Retarded
(CCAR) by providing funding for the purchase of housing for special needs
participants working with CCAR.
